Professional Development Program
October 2-3, 2009

Twenty-five Head Start preschool teachers from greater Philadelphia participated in a professional development workshop designed to expand their understanding of inquiry learning and scientific exploration in their classrooms. The workshop was facilitated by Wayne Ransom and Susan Holmes of The Franklin Institute.

It may look like the teachers were just having fun, but their comments tell how much they learned.

"Inquiry is not just asking questions, but exploring as well."

"I learned how to ask students open-ended questions that will allow them to think."

"I can't wait to go to work and show the kids my love for water."

"I view water as a learning tool and not just a place for the children to play by themselves."

"I will explore more and model this love of learning for my children."

"I now see the water table in a different way. It is such an opportunity for learning."

"I tended to avoid the 'mess' before - a bit afraid of the results. However, seeing the importance definitely offsets any hesitation on my part."

"I learned that the water table can be just as purposeful as the writing center."

"Usually, I just add toys to the water table. Now I am excited to actually add materials the children will explore with and that I can watch the different ways they try."

"The concept of making water play so much more of a learning experience rather than just an area. It will make my lesson planning easier."

"It was hands-on. We were able to have fun with the equipment as we learned what to do with it."

"The hands-on activities because I can take them back to the classroom to share with the children, the staff and also with my own children at home."
