On a dire night in April 1717 the Whydah Gally sailed into a violent storm dangerously close to Cape Cod. The flagship of a huge pirate flotilla under the command of Captain “Black Sam” Bellamy lost its last desperate battle with the elements. Bellamy, who was just 28 years old, had captured over 50 ships before this night. The Whydah was swept towards a sandbar where it quickly sank. Bellamy and most of his 146-man crew died. The priceless treasures consisting of nearly four and a half tons of silver, gold, gold dust, and jewelry looted from more than fifty ships were lost in the shifting sands of Marconi Beach on Cape Cod. Years later, in 1984, the legendary Whydah was discovered by the underwater explorer Barry Clifford. It is the only shipwreck definitively identified as a pirate ship.

Come and explore the Whydah and her story. See treasure chests of coins and gold, cannons, pistols, and knives salvaged from the ocean floor and a full size replica of the stern of the actual ship.
