Cylinder Dial
This cylindrical sundial provides another example of how science and art fused together during the Italian Renaissance. Like all sundials, this instrument operates on the basis of the apparent motion of the sun. The time of day is determined by the position of a shadow, created by a gnomon, or upright, on nearby hour markers. On this device, the hour markers are on the cylinder and the gnomon is the horizontal brass arm.
